Do We Need Prophets Today?

Do we need prophets today? Some people say that since we are living in the New Testament (dispensation of Grace), we do not need prophets while others say, Yes! We need prophets.

See the dispensations

Who is correct?

To know if we need prophets or not, we need to take the road down the Bible.

Do We Need Prophets Today?

From the first day God created Adam, He spoke directly audibly to humanity.

In Genesis we see God speaking directly audibly to Adam and Eve.

Gen 1:28: And God blessed them, and God said unto them,

Gen 3:13: And the LORD God said unto the woman, ‘What is this that thou hast done

God spoke directly audibly to Noah, to Abraham and Sarah, to Jacob and even to Cain.

Gen 4:9: And the LORD said unto Cain, ‘Where is Abel thy brother?’  And he said, ‘I know not: Am I my brother’s keeper?’

God spoke directly audibly to Moses for the rest of his life.

Ex 33:11: And the LORD spoke unto Moses face to face, as a man speaks unto his friend

But it is during Moses life time when God stopped speaking directly audibly to humanity.

From the day the children of Israel said to Moses, ‘You speak with us and we will hear: but let not God speak with us, lest we die’ (Ex 20:19), God stopped speaking directly audibly to humanity but only to His chosen servants the prophets.

See God speaks audibly to His chosen servants the prophets

From that day, God started speaking to humanity only through His chosen servants the prophets.

See God chooses His own servants

God continued speaking to humanity through His chosen servants the prophets until Jesus Christ started preaching.

John the Baptist was the last prophet of the Old Testament.

Remember that the day John the Baptist was put into prison is the day Jesus started preaching.

Mk 1:14-15: Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, saying, ‘The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel’

Why did God stop speaking audibly to prophets when Jesus started preaching?

Because Jesus was God; He was the same God who spoke to Adam, Noah, Abraham, Jacob and Moses. God was walking on earth speaking directly audibly to humanity.

Because God Himself (Jesus) was walking on earth speaking directly audibly to humanity, there was no need for prophets during Jesus time of preaching on earth.

When Jesus died on the cross, resurrected and ascended to heaven, something changed; God was not walking on earth anymore speaking directly audibly to humanity.

So what happened? What did God (Jesus Christ) do?

When Jesus ascended He gave men gifts.

Eph 4:8: Therefore he said,’ When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men’.

Some become apostles, others prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers

Eph 4:11: And he gave some, apostles; and some prophets; and some evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers

This is the five-fold ministry. See church leadership structure

Jesus was everything when walking on earth speaking to humanity. He was an apostle, a prophet, an evangelist, a teacher (rabbi), a pastor (shepherd); the five-fold ministry was in Him.

When He ascended He gave all these gifts to humans according to His grace.

Rom 12:6: Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us

See one of the gifts Jesus Christ gives is prophecy; i.e. He chooses His prophets according to His will.

Therefore we see prophets in the New Testament (Grace). We see Jesus Christ choosing His own prophets as He gives humanity prophecy gift according to His will.

No school can teach you prophecy neither can you inherit it or get it from a human being. It is a gift from Jesus Christ Himself.

This evil generation thinks that they can learn how to prophecy, they can inherit it, get it from a man or buy it with money. Brood of vipers!

As there were prophets in the Old Testament so are there prophets in the New Testament chosen by Jesus Christ Himself.

It is Him, Jesus Christ, who speaks directly and audibly to this New Testament prophets and He also appears physically to many of them.

Yes! He appeared to me physically in my testimony and He continues to appear.

Prophecy and divination are very different thus prophets and diviners are very different. See the spirit of divination.

Jesus Christ is the same God yesterday, today and forever. He is the same God who spoke to Adam, to Abraham, to Jacob, Moses and the children of Israel. He is the same God who speaks to today’s prophets.

Heb 13:8: Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today and forever.

Until the day the church stands in the clouds with Jesus Christ, until the day Jesus Christ appears in the east on a horse, humanity will only hear His voice through His chosen servants the prophets.

Hearken to the voice of Jesus Christ through His chosen prophets.

Jer 26:5: To hearken to the words of my servants the prophets, whom I sent unto you, both rising up early, and sending them

Stop abusing and speaking against God prophets because you are speaking against the same God you claim to worship and His wrath is aroused against you.

See do not speak against God servants

Why does the church need prophets today? Why do we need prophets today?
